Physicists tell
us that a thing is changed by the very act of being seen. And that the
viewer is changed by the act of seeing. Certainly this is most visibly
true with human beings desiring to be seen—really seen—and
maybe understood a little. People are what engage me most. It is this dynamic
and transforming interchange between
subject
and painter that
intrigues
me. And within that energetic activity between is the sweetest stillness
I have known. A sense of settling into that psychological and physiological
threshold
between
here and there, alternating tension and release as expression emerges on the
paper, being completely present. This is the lovely experience of painting
people and there is nothing like it.
