These six pastels are products of the recent trip by a local delegation from Bennington, Vermont to Somotillo, Nicaragua.* They express the spirit of four of the inspiring members of the Social Commission in Nicaragua, a child with whom the delegation spent time and with whom we fell in love, and the bathroom with which I also became too well acquainted. (Nuff said on that!)The four delegation members depicted—Julio, Marling, Fatima, and Odelia—have become part of my life, my e-mail correspondence and my dreams. They use their lives to help others, to help Somotillo recover from the devastation of the revolution, to face the current ecological and social challenges, and to build a better future through the well-being of Somotillo’s youth. They do all this work while also maintaining and developing the rich social culture, and devoting energy to the beauty of the place. And they work very hard to deepen the friendship, understanding and cooperative work with their sister city al norte of the same size, Bennington, Vermont.
The proceeds from these paintings belong to the Intern project.
