The Covered Bridge, by Viola Moriarty

Painting the local landscape has opened my eyes to seeing the gentle turn of the seasons: the first spring greens, the sensational sixty seven kinds of summer green that just keep coming, one after another until they begin to tint ochre and burnt orange, leading into the autumn reds and golds, and finally to the drop in temperature and shorter days that signal my favorite sport—snow painting, a time when a spectacular view opens up interrupted by the naked trees—the view that is for only those who will brave the winter cold.

What better teacher is there than nature? What better company than the trees themselves? I am grateful to each view for teaching me how to see, for getting me outside to fill my lungs with air so clean you can taste it, and for the knowledge of a blue that is only found in the sky at this altitude in this particular perfect place.
