Farmers’ market and Harrington Road

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

Some landscape sketches in oil from last night (12″ x 12″ on mdf boards) and a photo of Stella, Leslie and I after painting on Leslie’s land—the blue tree sketch is my first attempt at painting after dark–I had no idea what colors I was using!  We’d gone to the farmer’s market first, and then to paint the sunset at Leslie’s.

I was unsatisfied with all of these, for one reason or another, but I learned something from each one.  I am tempted to hold onto them and rework some things.  I’ve never done that before, so it would be a new challenge and new information.

Working and preparation right now is all about the landscape….moving into these end of summer ochres and the first hints of fall.  How to let these come through the canvas.  This is exciting work for me and a time of experimentation.

Comic Relief…….It's coming Tuesday!!!!!!

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

Anna Moriarty Lev’s Comic Relief Exhibition is currently at Images Theatre in Williamstown and It is Fantastic! Original comic art at its best!  Shelf Life, Buggin’ Out, and Jones Bones original comics as well as some of Anna’s other drawings.   At the opening celebration, July 6 at 4 pm, there will be a screening of two short films, En Passant by Georgia Roxon (10 minutes) and Palace Hotel by Dylan Pasture (30 minutes).  Anna Moriarty Lev worked on both films.  Anna, Dylan and Georgia will be present to introduce the films and hold a brief Q & A immediately following the screenings.  Wine and popcorn will be served.  Plan to be there.  The event is free, and so are the popcorn and wine, but stash a little cashin your pocket to buy a comic book or Shelf Life T shirt signed by the artist.

I got a bit behind last week posting the Omer count, so this one is out of order.

Last Friday, Peter and I went to Albany on the bus:  It was the most beautiful art and architecture and garden tour!  Even a carousel ride and confronting my fear of revolving doors.  A day of true friendship and inspiration punctuated by Jon joining us to eat Mexican food in Troy before we all headed back to Bennington together.

I’ve lived here for 11 years, but I’d never been anywhere in Albany except the airport and the train station!  I see that this region has so much more to offer than I ever knew.  Thank you, Peter.

Netzach shebe Gevurah= The Hall of Fame

Sunday, April 11th, 2010

One of the best things about being an artist is that I am around a great deal of amazing art–not just in museums, but work  made by my (mostly) living breathing friends.  I live in small space and most of the minimal wall space is dedicated to the constantly changing gallery of my own works in progress.  But the house has this lovely wide staircase and a collection of our favorite artworks by others has been arranging itself over the past several years into what we call “the Hall of Fame”.  It is a high honor for any artist to give some wall space to another’s work.  So, Joyce came and she put up a light so that those artworks in the Hall of Fame could be enjoyed more fully.  (I spotted her while she worked!) It looks beautiful.

That night (Friday) I counted the 11th day of the Omer, Netzach shebe Gevurah, Endurance in Strength and Fear, which all true artists know about.  I held up my wine and  gave a toast to all who inhabit the Hall of Fame and thanked my friends for continuing to strengthen me every time I walk up to my studio.

Back to the Garden, again

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

It’s time. I know because I’ve started receiving seed and plant catalogs. Yah, mon. It’s really true. Two feet of snow outside and the gardening planning for this year begins. I’m a nubie, yeah, but not so much as before. There is a smug feeling about knowing that this is where the (literal) underground gardening is going on and how certain gardeners seem to have a head start in the spring. It’s because they’ve been actually working since January (sooner?). My fam has already started helping carry crushed concrete back from the field to line this year’s proposed boundaries in my little gardens.

Everything in this life begins a long time before it can be seen and heard aloud.

Opening Reception

Sunday, 12 July 09

3-5 p.m.

After I begain painting, June 6, 2002, within a few days I had a dream where certain dead painters and my very alive nephew were at the easel with me and they all kept saying “just move the blocks of colour around”.  I couldn’t understand, so my nephew finally walked forward and magically took apart the canvas and rearranged the colour shapes, saying “See, just move the blocks of colour around!”  At that moment I understood completely and when I woke up Iwas sure I knew how to make the paintings in the dream! …..That is, until I got to the studio and realized I had no idea how to make them.  I’ve had this dream so many times over the past seven years.  Finally, with a little help from my colorful comrades, the dream is beginning to manifest in my waking life.

This is all new work–a small but exciting collection of nine paintings–one of which is made up of six four by six inch paintings on mdf boards— and the first showing of works completed purely for the sake of studying color and light in a way that answers that recurring dream.  It is the beginning of what will ultimately be several stages of colour study and expression exhibitions over the next years.

This exhibit is dedicated to Renee Bouchard, Deborah Dorfman, Shelli DuBoff, Sharon Yorke,  Craig Clement, and Johann W. V. Goethe, comrades in art, science, poetry and fierce individualism—all of whom are teaching me intensively about mixing color, the way light activates particulate and perceived mass, and about how to be a better student while I’m dreaming and while I’m awake.

Cake entries for Northern Berkshire Creative Arts Auction

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

This past weekend my sister, Denver photog Theresa Holst, came in to visit and we had a blast making our cakes for the Northern Berkshire Creative Arts Auction coming up in July.  Check the website for what this fantastic arts organization does for the community of North Adams and the surrounding area.  Theresa made a “coffee cake” and I made a “crocake”.   (They are not edible.)  I am so inexperienced at drawing animals that my good friend and neighbor, Claudia Dalton–Paper and mixed media artist–had to come over and draw/paint the realistic side of the crow!  Thanks, Claudia!  We wish all success to the Northern Berkshire Creative Arts!
