bio
Viola Moriarty
(American, b. 1958)

“Physicists tell us that the very act of seeing changes us, and changes the object of our perception. I paint solely and directly from life largely because of this energetic exchange between the seer and the seen. Creative process is perceiving information and deciding how to personally engage that information; it is this process that most interests me. Painting is also hard work. It requires a particular kind of focus and energy. When I step to the easel, I feel I was born for this work. All my liabilities—my tenacity, boldness, tender heart, passion and insatiable curiosity–become my assets. When I am painting, I feel like myself.
Nature is my sweetest and most demanding teacher, and it is to her that I am most grateful.”

*Note: At the end of 2010 began painting primarily with left hand, sometimes utilizing both (due to increasing neuropathy in both hands, but especially the right). It was good friend Jonathan Burkhardt who made the recommendation while I was working on Pomegranate.
Between July and December 2010 two knee surgeries and severe osteoarthritis in my knees increasingly changed my way of painting from standing up, gross motor, to a sitting style of working (utilizing reducing glass and mirrors for reviewing).

Education
- First painting, 2 June 2002: In plein air behind Powers Market at the suggestion of, and in the company of, my good friend and first art instructor/mentor, Stella Ehrich, and good friend and fellow artist, Sophia Warsh. That day changed my life forever. I changed the organization of my whole life, and continued to work in the studio with still life, live model, landscape in plein air and painted almost every day from that moment on. I continue to benefit from Stella Ehrich’s friendship as a fellow painter, and from consultations with her as a master painter on and off over the ensuing years. It is she who taught me how to gesso boards and gave me that first model for painting outdoors which has continued to inform all that I do. I am forever grateful.
